Why All Glass Rooms in Dubai Must Use Tempered Glass
All glass used in structural or semi-structural applications in Dubai — glass rooms, pergola roofs, shower enclosures, balustrades, and office partitions — must be fully tempered (toughened) or laminated per UAE Building Code and Dubai Municipality technical requirements. Standard annealed glass is prohibited in these applications.
Tempered glass is heat-treated to create compressive surface stresses that give it 4–5 times the bending strength of standard annealed glass. More importantly, when tempered glass breaks, it shatters into thousands of small, relatively blunt granules rather than the large sharp shards that annealed glass produces. This fragmentation pattern is what makes it a safety glass — it dramatically reduces the risk of serious laceration injury from glass breakage in an occupied structure.
